Mobile phone giant Nokia announced on Friday that it could cut up to 230 research and development jobs at its Oulu location. Another 100 employees will face the axe at the company's Copenhagen site -- a reduction of roughly 10 percent at each location.

Nokia says it will try to transfer employees to other positions within the company.

Over 2,000 people work for Nokia's R&D in Oulu, northern Finland's largest city, and over 1,000 in the Danish capital.

Communication chiefs Arja Suominen said the layoffs are due to the company's plan to end the development of certain products.

”We have examined at our future portfolio and plan to make cuts. Product development cuts are occurring at the sites that are facing layoffs,” she told the news agency Startel.

The company did not announce which products were to be eliminated.

Over 17,000 people work for Nokia's product development worldwide.

Last month, the company reported a third quarter net loss of 559 million euros and a 20 percent drop in sales.
