Physicians say the swine flu vaccine is offering effective protection against the virus. In the Pirkanmaa region near Tampere none of the expectant women inoculated against H1N1 have fallen ill with the influenza.

Infectious disease specialist Jukka Lumio at the Pirkanmaa hospital district says that vaccinated health care workers also seem to be avoiding the bug. He points out that there has been no change to the average number of sick leave cases among health care staff in the district.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health says it will decide by Thursday whether to inoculate Finland's entire population of 5.3 million.

So far, a million people in Finland have been inoculated against the H1N1 influenza strain.
