Finland's biggest art prize, the Ars Fennica, has been awarded to multimedia artist Jussi Kivi, aged 50. He was handed the award at Helsinki's Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art on Thursday afternoon. The prize is worth 34,000 euros.
Kivi, whose dark, mysterious works are strongly influenced by his exploration of the wilderness, is the 18th winner of the Ars Fennica. His works include photographs and mixed-media constructions. They have been exhibited in solo exhibitions in Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden and around Finland.
He was chosen from a field of five men including Matti Kalkamo, Mika Karhu, Jyrki Riekki and Petri Yrjölä. The choice was made by Vicente Todolí, Director of London's Tate Modern Museum.
An exhibition of work by all five is on display at Kiasma until January 10.
