Some 7,000 buildings in the north west of Helsinki were without power for a time on Tuesday morning. The half-hour blackout was the work of a squirrel that caused a short circuit at a power station.

Thousands of homes and other buildings in the Pitäjänmäki, Pajamäki and Etelä-Haaga districts were without power.

Power company Helsingin Energia said a squirrel had caused the short circuit at a power station in Pitäjänmäki.

The squirrel died in the incident and several others were evicted from the generating station by power company employees. Power supplies were re-routed from other stations while repairs were carried out.
