The mercury dropped down to a frigid 37.1 degrees Celsius at Kuusamo airport Friday morning at 7:40 am, marking a new record low for the winter.

However in spite of the frosty conditions the Finnish Meteorological Institute has predicted that milder weather is on the way, ensuring that this latest benchmark will last – at least till the end of next week.

On Friday the regions of Koillismaa and Kainuu were the coldest areas in western Finland, and numbing temperatures down to -35 degrees were also recorded in Inari and Kittilä in the north.

The previous record lows registered at Kevo in Utsjoki Thursday morning, at -36.7 degrees Celsius. In southern Finland, last Monday saw the area's coldest temperatures, which plummeted to -35.5 degrees in Konnunsuo, Lappeenranta. On Friday, however, cloudy skies prevented a repeat of Monday’s record lows.
