Parliamentarian and former police officer Juha Hakola wants the powerful stimulant methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) to be classified as a controlled substance in Finland. So far, 140 parliamentarians have signed a bill on the issue being circulated by Hakola.

The bill has support from every political party.

Several people recently died after taking MDPV in Finland. The stimulant has also made its way into several schools in Vantaa, southern Finland. MDPV is a powerful aphrodisiac which causes hypersexuality, particularly in men.

Sweden recently decided to classify MDPV as a controlled substance. In Finland, however, the drug is considered a medicinal substance. Because of its current status, MDPV can be imported and sold in Finland without fear of serious repercussions.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has discussed banning the stimulant. However, the ministry says changing the classification of the drug is a long and drawn-out process.
