All sixteen of the flamingos housed at Helsinki's Korkeasaari Zoo were found dead on Friday morning.

According to Helsinki police, zoo officials reported that the birds had been found badly mauled near their enclosure during the early morning hours.

Zoo Director Jukka Salo believes that a wild fox is likely to have crossed the ice to the island where the zoo is located and attacked the birds.

The zoo's flamingos usually spent their nights indoors. An investigation is being undertaken to determine why they were left outside for the night.

The incident was first reported by the Finnish News Agency STT.
