A working group from the Ministry of Justice wants tougher sentences for persons found guilty of sexually abusing children.

For example, the group wants individuals convicted of sexually abusing a child to serve at least four months in jail. Currently the minimum sentence is 14 days.

Furthermore, the proposal calls for persons found guilty of having sex with a child under 16 to be convicted of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. Possession of child pornography would also hold tougher sentences.

The working group is proposing a new penal provision for persons who groom children for sexual acts with the help of the internet or mobile phones. Those found guilty could get a fine or at most a year in prison.

Officials also want more thorough criminal background checks of people working with children.
