Professions in Finland are still clearly split down gender lines. Finland ranks fourth in Europe for having the most gender-divided labour market.

The division of men's and women's work also explains wage differences for the genders.

Labour market organisations are calling for gender barriers to be broken down. They point to labour shortages in the female-dominated health care fields which could benefit from more male workers.

However, removing obstacles has not been easy. A couple of years ago, Helsinki Diakonia College launched an ad campaign to try to draw more men into health care fields. The field still suffers from labour shortages.
