The Minister of Transportation and Communications, Anu Vehviläinen, says transport funding should be shifted to focus on basic road maintenance.

The Finnish Transport Agency says that about six percent of the country's roads are in need of repair.

Interviewed on YLE's morning chat show on Wednesday, Vehviläinen presented a multi-year programme aimed at fixing the existing road network.

However she added that with the state budget as tight as it is, this would mean postponing major new projects. This would not affect ongoing projects such as the widening of Route 51, one of Helsinki's main western arteries.

Centre Party MP Vehviläinen has held the transport portfolio for three years.
