Argentina and Uruguay have reached agreement in their dispute over a Finnish-owned pulp mill on the Uruguayan side of the river separating the two countries.

The countries agreed on Wednesday to set up a joint environmental programme to monitor water quality in the Uruguay River.

The agreement puts an end to a seven-year dispute over the Finnish mill.

The mill, built by the Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer Metsä Botnia and now run by UPM, has raised environmental concerns in Argentina. Protesters had kept a bridge linking the two countries closed for three years.

In the spring, the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that the pulp mill is not in violation of environmental treaties between the two countries.
