The Finnish Metalworkers’ Union and the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries have reached agreement on a new pay settlement. The contract gives employees a one percent overall hike, and a possibility for personal raises of up to one half of one percent. The contract also allows for local contracts under different terms.

The pay hikes at to take effect after October. The increases apply to a total of about 200,000 employees. The contract extends through the end of 2012, with annual talks on any pay hikes after this autumn.

The agreement requires the approval of the decision-making bodies of both sides.

Prime Minister Welcomes Agreement

Prime Minister Mari Kiviniemi said that she was pleased with the agreement. She said that the two sides had probably assessed competitiveness in the field as they decided on the terms.

She also said that the Prime Minister has no fixed framework into which contracts should fit, although she has spoken on behalf of moderation in pay hikes.
