Police in the northern city of Rovaniemi have called off a search for a bear. The police started to search for a bear early Monday evening after two reported sightings. The sightings were in a forest, about half a kilometre from a residential area. Now officials believe that the animal may actually have been a large dog.

The first sighting was reported at about 6:00 in the evening by a berry-picker. After an hour and a half another person also reported seeing a bear.

Police were later contacted by a dog owner who suspects that his large dog may have been mistaken for a bear by passers-by.

On Sunday night, a search for a bear sighted near Tampere was also called off.
