Katainen officially nominated Prime Minister candidate

President Tarja Halonen has submitted to the parliament the written nomination of National Coalition Party chair Jyrki Katainen as the candidate for Prime Minister.

The President met the Speaker of Parliament, Ben Zyskowicz, at the presidential summer residence in the town of Naantali on Tuesday.

In accordance with the constitution, Halonen then made her official nomination of the candidate for Prime Minister to the parliament.

Chair of the biggest party in parliament, Katainen has led the government formation talks since the election on April 17. The talks concluded last Friday.

On Wednesday, Halonen will swear in the new government, composed of the National Coalition, the SDP, the Left Alliance, the Green League, the Swedish People’s Party and the Christian Democrats.
