Emergency centers annually receive hundreds of thousands of calls made in error. Usually a phone in a caller’s pocket selects the emergency number by mistake.
In other cases, callers confuse the emergency 112 number with a directory enquiry number, 118.
A total of 380,000 calls were made in error to emergency centers during the first half of this year. This is in addition to almost 100,000 nuisance calls.
Despite the number of unnecessary calls some 96 percent of calls were answered within 30 seconds.
