The French company Areva, which is building Finland's fifth nuclear reactor in Eurajoki on the west coast, has admitted that the Olkiluoto 3 unit will not be up and running until August 2014 -- five years later than originally promised.

On Wednesday, Areva confirmed what plant owner Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) said it suspected back in October: that the launch of operations would have to be delayed by nearly another year. At that point Areva denied the claim.

Areva-Siemens, a French-German consortium, is building the 1,600 megawatt reactor on a fixed-price turn-key contract. The project has been beset by years of delays, cost overruns, labour disputes and protests.
