Strong winds from the west are gradually weakening as the storm that has raged across Finland moves eastwards. However, a new area of low pressure is approaching from the west bringing more gusty but less severe conditions.

By late Monday, the current storm had moved into Russia but gale force winds persisted in the Gulf of Finland and along the south coast. In western Finland average winds speeds reached 28.5 metres per second in Kaskinen with gusts up to 35 m/s also reported. Gusts as high as 31.5 m/s were recorded in Espoo on the south coast.

Early evening wind speeds had dropped to around 9 m/s in the west and to 17 m/s. Monday's highest temperature of 9.9 degrees Celisus was recorded in the Åland Islands.

Finland has not experienced such an intense storm since 2004.

A new area of low pressure complete with fresh high winds is reaching Finland from the west on Tuesday. Strongest winds are forecast in Northern Karelia and Northern Savo.
