Niinistö pledges no change in second round

National Coalition candidate Sauli Niinistö said Sunday evening that the candidates' opinions have been aired and their styles of campaigning have been seen, and for his part, he intends to continue the same during the decisive second round.

According to Niinistö, around 45% of voters will now have to rethink a favourite candidate.

He said that what speaks on behalf of his candidacy is that he has been known to the voting public for a long time, and it is known what he thinks and how he acts.

Niinistö seemed doubtful that any new major issues can be raised during the next two weeks, since all of the main issues were discussed numerous times during the first round of the campaign.

He expressed the view that a pro-Europe policy and support for the euro has received strong backing from the people. People now, he said, have a longing for stability.

Sauli Niinistö was surprised at voter turnout, saying that he had expected it to be higher than the 72.8% registered.

Niinistö expected that the tight race in the final days of the campaign would have motivated even more voters to go to the polls.
