No deal yet over Finnair outsourcing plan

With talks deadlocked, representatives of the Trade Union Pro and the Finnish Aviation Union IAU talks continued with national labour conciliator Esa Lonka on Monday evening.

Official negotiations between Finnair and the unions over severance packages for the airline’s technical staff are to resume on Tuesday morning.

Pro president Antti Rinne said that not much progress was made in Monday’s talks, which ended in the afternoon. Over the weekend, he had optimistically predicted that the dispute would be resolved on Monday.

The flag carrier is outsourcing its maintenance services to a Swiss firm, with the potential loss of 280 jobs. Last Finnair technical staff members walked off the job because they did not approve of the support packages offered by the airline. Controversially, the strike was then cut short by a district court order. The unions are filing an appeal of that decision, worried that it sets a dangerous precedent.
