Ollila: Reactions to Nokia Lumia positive
Outgoing Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila says he expects Nokia Lumia to be a success in Finland. In an interview with the YLE talk show A-plus on Wednesday evening, Ollila said that analyst and consumer response to Nokia’s first Windows-based smartphone has been even better than expected.
Ollila noted that it will take time for Nokia's Windows-based phones to truly take off as a new platform always requires adjustment.
Nokia announced a switch from its own Symbian and MeeGo operating systems to the Windows Phone platform last February. Nokia's first Windows-based smartphone to be released in Finland, Lumia 800, hit the shelves on Wednesday.
The structural change has been difficult and it will still reflect on Nokia’s results for a significant part of this year, Ollila said. Still, he noted, at the moment it looks like Nokia made the right decision in joining forces with Microsoft.
Three major mobile phone platforms are coming to dominate the market, each driven by a big phone maker, Ollila said. He expressed the belief that Nokia can become one of the three major manufacturers.
Ollila also criticised the Finnish government’s plans to raise taxes and cut spending. He believes that such actions in a recessionary climate could worsen economic problems.
