One million Finns over 65

There are now more than a million people aged 65 or over in Finland, or some 18 percent of the population.

The number of persons aged 65 or over in Finland exceeded one million in July. According to preliminary figures issued by Statistics Finland on Thursday, 1,003,212 persons aged 65 or over were residing permanently in Finland at the end of July.

A clear majority of them, or 579,298, were women. The number of persons aged 65 or over passed a quarter of a million back in 1944 and the half a million figure was exceeded in 1975.

Finland's population at the end of July stood at 5,413,901.

A total of 35,050 children were born in the first half of this month. This is 50 more than in the same period last year.
