As of the beginning of September, all employees at new construction sites will have to wear photo ID cards showing tax registration numbers.

So far, only about half of the more than 180,000 builders working in the country have applied for tax numbers.

Those with Finnish citizenship have already been issued tax numbers.

Anyone hiring a builder will be able to check that his or her papers are in order via a public registry.

Workers on older construction sites have until March 1 to get their tax identity badges.

Next year, the new system moves into the next stage, when each chief contractor will have to provide tax officials with a monthly report on who exactly is working on each construction site.

More details are available on the Tax Administration website.
