Court Ruling on Local Elections

The Supreme Administrative Court has ruled last autumn’s local elections in three municipalities must be restaged due to errors in electronic voting.

Elections will take place in Kauniainen, Karkkila and Vihti.

Earlier, the Helsinki Administrative Court had turned down complaints made by the muncipalities over errors and inaccuracies in electronic voting.

The Court added there were deficiencies in voting cards. Errors also occured in the actual elections themselves where just over 200 votes were unrecognised. For these reasons, the court ruled preparations for electronic voting had been compromised and, therefore, the poll was null and void.

Minister of Justice, Tuija Brax, expressed her satisfaction at the court's decision.
