Hautala is the first Finnish government minister to visit Myanmar since its recent transition to civilian rule.

According to Hautala, President U Thein Sein appeared very committed to reforming the country, which was ruled by a military junta for five decades. However Aung San Suu Kyi noted that more than good will was needed for reforms to be made.

Hautala invited Suu Kyi, one of the world's most renown freedom fighters, to visit Finland.
