Lapland experiences record freeze

Record low temperatures have been recorded in Finnish Lapland, with the mercury plummeting to -36.1 degrees Celsius overnight. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) registered the new low at Kevojärvi in Utsjoki.

Second coldest was Kevo, with a temperature of -35.3 degrees Celsius.

Other locations in Finnish Lapland also experienced a serious cold spell, including Pokka in Kittilä (-34.9 degrees), Näkkälä in Enontekiö (-34.5 degrees) and Väylä in Inari (-34.4 degrees).

Also braving lows beyond -33 were Alamuonio (-33.6 degrees) and Kilpisjärvi’s town centre (33.5 degrees).

Helsinki police deny ethnic profiling in Uber crackdown

Authorities in Helsinki are investigating about 120 suspected cases of unlicensed taxi operations using the Uber mobile phone app. So far 11 Uber drivers have been charged at Helsinki district court, while another 80 cases have been referred for prosecutors to consider charges. Nearly all of the suspects are described as being of foreign background. Police say that nearly all of the suspects had foreign backgrounds but deny profiling played a part in the sweep.
