The refinery started producing biodiesel last November, and is the biggest renewable diesel refinery in the world.

The plant can produce 800,000 tonnes of biodiesel per year. The plant uses palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia and waste animal fat from New Zealand and Australia.

The Singapore facility has been ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certified, and therefore meets the sustainability criteria laid down in the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive. This means that fuel from the plant meets the bio-mandate requirements of the German market.

Attending the ceremony, Finland’s Minister of Defence Jyri Häkämies said that Neste Oil is committed to becoming the world’s leading producer of biodiesel in an effort to combat climate change. In addition, Neste only uses ISCC certified palm oil.

The company already has two biodiesel refineries in Porvoo, and will open a new one in Rotterdam this summer.

Meanwhile, Greenpeace demonstrated in Helsinki against the use of palm oil. The environmental pressure group believes that palm oil’s sustainability is unproven, and that sustainability certification does not necessarily prevent rainforest destruction.

They urge the EU to refine its certification criteria to ensure that the full impact of palm oil production, including indirect effects of land uses, is taken into account.
