Parliament observes moment of silence in memory of late President Koivisto

MPs gathered in parliament Tuesday afternoon observed a minute of silence to honour the memory of late President Mauno Koivisto. A condolence book was also opened to the public Tuesday.

Finnish parliamentarians observed a minute of silence at the start of Tuesday’s sitting in a mark of respect for former President Mauno Koivisto, who passed away last Friday at the age of 93. Koivisto served two six-year terms as president between 1982 and 1994.

The office of the president, now held by Sauli Niinistö, also opened a condolence book for the public to sign on Tuesday. Niinistö was the first to sign the book on Tuesday morning.

The book will remain open at the Presidential Palace in Katajanokka until Friday from 10.00am to 3.00pm daily. Public access is through the Mariankatu Steet entrance to the palace.

Members of the public who are unable to sign the book in person may also express their condolences online.

Koivisto will be afforded a state funeral, the date of which is to be announced by government tomorrow. However one possible date put forward is Ascension Thursday, May 25.
