Race for Green Chair Heats Up
Member of Parliament Anni Sinnemäki has entered the race to head the Green League. This is yet another blow to current chairman Osmo Soininvaara's prospects of being re-elected.
Sinnemäki had earlier said she would not run for the post. She said she was persuaded by her supporters to launch a bid.
Sinnemäki told the current affairs weekly Suomen Kuvalehti that she sees no need for any dramatic changes to Green policies.
Only a couple of months ago, it seemed a foregone conclusion that Osmo Soininvaara would be re-elected as party chair.
Now he is faced with a tough challenge from several women members of the party.
In addition to Sinnemäki, MPs Tarja Cronberg and Irina Krohn are seeking the top spot in the Green League.
Sinnemäki rejected suspicions that she is running to undercut support for Cronberg, considered the strongest challenger for the post.
Cronberg, who lives in Northern Karelia, enjoys the greatest support among party members outside of the capital region. She is the only non-Helsinkian among the four candidates.
Sinnemäki, a 31-year-old deputy party chair, first rose to national prominence as a poet and lyricist for the successful pop group Ultra Bra.
The Greens will choose a chair at their party conference in Kokkola in late May.
