Yet another cold record for this winter was set in Kiutaköngäs near Kuusamo, where the temperature plunged to -38.7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning.

The record temperature was registered around 8am. One hour later, the cold had eased to a mere -35 degrees.

Other parts of northern Finland are also experiencing record cold. In Naruska, Salla, the mercury dropped to -36.8 degrees Celsius in the early hours of Wednesday. It was not much warmer in Taivalkoski, chilled to a cool -36.6 degrees.

A high pressure area over Russia is pushing freezing, but sunny weather to Finland.

The coldest temperature ever in Finland, -51.5 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Poka, some 80 kilometres south of Kittilä, in 1999.
