Rimma Salonen Charged with Child Abduction

Rimma Salonen, a Russian woman who took her son with her to Russia last year without the permission of the child’s Finnish father, is being charged with aggravated deprivation of freedom, child abduction, and embezzlement.

District prosecutor Mika Mäkinen submitted the indictment to Tampere District Court on Tuesday. The matter comes up for trial on October 26.

Salonen’s lawyer, Heikki Lampela, says that the charges did not come as a surprise. The investigation has been expedited as a travel ban has been imposed on Salonen.

“Rimma Salonen herself feels that she has not committed a crime,” Lampela says.

After taking her son to Russia, she lived there for just over a year, before the father found them and took the son back to Finland in the boot of a car owned by an official at the Finnish Consulate in St. Petersburg, who assisted the father in the operation.

Finland's National Bureau of Investigation is looking into whether the diplomat broke any laws.
