Rows at Home Warrant Sick Leave

When can a worker take sick leave? For employers, the answer is simple. However, a recent survey shows that their employees have a more liberal view about when they can stay at home.

About 70 percent of Finns feel that family problems entitle them to go on sick leave for a day or two.

A survey commissioned by the daily Helsingin Sanomat shows that two out of three Finns also believe that you can stay home if you feel stressed at work or more tired than usual. Women are more likely to accept fatigue as a reason for absence than men.

Both sexes condemn a hangover as an acceptable reason to stay away from work.

Finland is famous for its generous welfare policies. However, it has seen sick leave abesteeism rise steadily.

Following similar results from a study in Sweden earlier this autumn, welfare authorities there planned to launch a campaign to educate Swedes about when they can take sick leave.

Here in Finland, the Confederation of Finnish Industries has been trying to spark a debate on the extent of what it deems sick leave for the wrong reasons.

On average a Finn takes two weeks off from work on sick leave.
