Särkänniemi theme park has rethink after price-hike drives customers away

Visitor satisfaction has dropped and overall ticket sales are down after the Tampere adventure park abandoned single-ride tickets and raised the price of access-all-areas wristbands.

The park’s management has admitted that last year’s ticketing changes led to a drop in visitor numbers, and has promised a new system of ticketing in time for summer 2014.

Since summer 2012, customers have no longer been able to buy single tickets to visit the dolphinarium, planetarium, aquarium or the newly built Doghill area, a theme village based on the comics of Finnish illustrator Mauri Kunnas.

Instead, visitors have been forced to pay for an access-all-areas wrist pass, the price of which was itself raised on the previous year.

“This has been a valuable learning experience for us at Särkanniemi,” conceded project manager Maria Eskelinen, who said that visitor satisfaction at the Doghill attraction was high, but that other parts of the adventure park failed to satisfy.

”Last summer’s ticket solution wasn’t successful, and that error will be corrected next summer. We’re working hard to put together a new pricing package. We’ve read all customer feedback and have listened to the views of focus groups about the different options available. We want to ensure that our admission price meets people’s expectations,” Eskelinen said.

On Saturday Särkänniemi will begin its Christmas season, being celebrated for the first time in the Doghill village area.
