Seven Dead in Collision

Seven people were killed Friday night in a head-on collision between a taxi and another car in Loimaa, southern Finland.

The taxi driver, 66, was alone while six teenagers, aged 15 to 18, were in the other car.

The accident took place on highway 9, about 12 kilometres from Loimaa to Tampere. Road conditions were poor at the time because of snowfall.

The teenagers' car swerved on the oncoming lane on a downhill stretch of road. None of the young people were apparently wearing seatbelts.

This was one of Finland's worst traffic accidents in recent decades. In March last year, 23 people died at Konginkangas in a collision between a coach and a truck. An investigation board has been set up to look into the collision.
