Finland’s Somali League is calling on the diaspora here to actively help rebuild the war-torn country.

”The Finnish Somali community rejoices over the political change in Somalia,” said the organisation in a statement on Tuesday.

The league is urging Somalis living in Finland to support democracy, freedom of speech and human rights in their old home country.

On Monday Somalia's parliament elected the country's new president in the first such vote in decades. The surprise winner, Hassan Mohamud, is a political newcomer and former academic. He defeated the incumbent in a second round of voting. Somalia has lacked an effective central government since 1991.

Amal Abdi Ibrahim, a resident of Finland who was hoping to run for the presidency of Somalia, was struck from the list of candidates because she is under the minimum age of 40.
