The Ministry of Employment and the Economy is prepared to sponsor the architectural competition for a potential Guggenheim museum in Helsinki, provided that the building will be constructed from wood.

Permanent Secretary Erkki Virtanen from the ministry confirmed the news to Yle, saying that the financing could amount to some 800,000 euros.

According to Virtanen, the Guggenheim project could be a boon to Finnish timber construction if the architectural competition had such a slant.

The competition is being prepared at Helsinki’s City Planning Department, which has been seeking potential sponsors for the project.

Helsinki Mayor Jussi Pajunen may present a letter of intent regarding the museum next week.

Funding for the Guggenheim museum in Helsinki has aroused fierce debate. Culture Minister Paavo Arhinmäki has repeatedly stated that his ministry cannot bankroll the project.
