Stolen medieval rings recovered

Two rare 15th century rings that went missing from a display case in Häme Castle in the town of Hämeenlinna last Friday have been returned to museum officials.

Hämeen Linnasta varastettu kullattu 1400-luvulta peräisin oleva ”Ystävyys-sormus”, jossa kaksi kättä pitää sydäntä.

According to information received by Yle, the rings were recovered on Monday.

Jouni Kuurne of Finland's National Board of Antiquities told Yle that both rings had been returned.

The rings, which date from the 1400s, were discovered in Häme Castle during restoration work in the 1950s and 1960s. Because of their direct association with the castle, they are considered especially valuable in terms of historical studies.

"One of them is a so-called friendship or fidelity ring that shows two hands holding a heart," explains Kuurne. "A half a dozen rings of this type have been found in Finland, so in that respect they are quite rare."
