Strike Threatens Finnish Harbours

The Finnish Transport Workers' Union is threatening Finnish seaports with a strike if no progress is made on contract talks with harbour workers. The strike by stevedores would shut down all Finnish harbours on April 15. A ban on overtime came into force on Friday.

The harbour workers' contract expired at the end of February. Unsuccessful negotiations for a new one have been held since mid-November.

The union is demanding tighter rules on the use of temporary workers in harbours.

The harbour workers want about 200 people who repeatedly work in harbours doing short term work to be given long term contracts.
