Some 16 percent opposed a tax in the survey carried out by pollster Taloustutkimus. Support for the tax is uniform across the political spectrum.

A tax on mining operations has been proposed. It comes after disclosures that some mining firms had fallen short on environmental regulations.

Around 1,000 people were questioned in the survey which has a margin of error of three percentage points either way.
