In the summer’s most severe storm, lightning sparked several fires over the night. A popular festival in Turku also had to be closed due to the tempestuous weather.

The thundery front from the Baltic region advanced on south-western and southern Finland as well as Ostrobothnia.

A record amount of lightning activity was recorded during the night, as well as exceptionally strong winds in sea areas.

At least two buildings were set alight by lightning in the south-west. Lightning also caused fires in Espoo and Mäntsälä.

A 15-square-meter sauna building beside a derelict house was burnt to the ground in Salo.

Other fires were reported in Masku, Punkalaidun and the Ostrobothnian localities of Mustasaari and Luoto, where another sauna building was totally destroyed.

No injuries were reported in any of the fires.
