Tuusula calls for revocation of airport environmental permit

The city of Tuusula is calling for the cancellation of an environmental permit granted to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Municipal leaders in Tuusula say that the permit runs counter to regional and municipal planning regulations.

Tuusula officials say that any expansion of airport operations could cause noise pollution to extend further into municipal territory, and that this was not taken into consideration when the permit was being processed.

In a response lodged in the Vaasa administrative court, Tuusula officials point out that the airport noise pollution boundaries cannot be re-mapped each time there is a new forecast for growth in airport passenger traffic.

“If this (permit) remains in force, it will considerably affect planning for a regiment park in the area. We feel that the permit should be canceled altogether, because the grounds for decision making were inadequate,” said city manager Hannu Joensivu.

Apart from the city of Tuusula, several neighbouring municipalities planning residential complexes have also appealed the granting of the permit to the airport.
