Finance Minister and incumbent Social Democratic chair Jutta Urpilainen has been chosen to head the party for a second four-year term.

Urpilainen ran unopposed in Friday’s party leadership elections, which took place at the party convention in Helsinki.

Urpilainen was given a standing ovation by party faithful when her re-election was confirmed. In her acknowledgment speech, the party chair said she did not believe in cliques or games in politics, but declared that for her politics means truth.

She urged party members to spread consciousness about SDP politics among others.

Elected as the party's new secretary was Reijo Paananen, communications director of the main labour federation, the SAK.
