US publisher buys Oksanen’s latest novel

Sofi Oksanen’s When the Doves Disappeared has been sold to Knopf Publishers in the United States.

“Sofi Oksanen is a fantastic addition to Knopf and we’re excited to bring the novel to American readers,” publisher Sonny Mehta said in a statement.

The Finnish-Estonian author’s latest novel dealing with Estonia’s recent history has already been sold to a dozen countries including Spain, France, Germany the Czech Republic and Ukraine.

According to the award-winning author, When the Doves Disappeared is a story of occupation and resistance in the small Baltic nation during and after World War II.

The Estonian-language version of the book will roll off the presses in November. Other language versions will follow later, with translations into Nordic languages first in line.
