Woman Dies of Mushroom Poisoning

A woman in Hämeenlinna has died after ingesting a destroying angel mushroom ( Amanita virosa). The regional daily Hämeen Sanomat was the first to report the news.

The elderly woman, who was said to be knowledgeable about wild fungi, died in hospital over the weekend.

The Helsinki and Uusimaa hospital district reports it is currently treating four serious mushroom poisoning cases, some of them foreigners.

An unusually high number of mushroom poisonings have recently come to light. People have for example ingested the white destroying angel mushrooms after mistaking them for button mushrooms.

Mushroom poisoning, or mycetism, is very rare in Finland. There have only been a few poisoning cases over the past decade, with some years not seeing a single episode.
