A professor who left the California Institute of Technology after a university investigation found that he engaged in gender-based discrimination and harassment has had his contract with Turku University cancelled.

The university’s rector had previously insisted that the decision to appoint the US professor was considered very carefully, but the university felt it was unfair to punish him repeatedly.

“I have considered the matter and decided that the person in question’s employment at Turku University will be cancelled,” said the rector, Kalervo Väänänen, in a press statement. “In reaching this decision I consulted extensively with the scientific community.”

The US professor had been given a two-year fixed term contract, and was expected to begin his work at the beginning of March.
