A man was shot by police in Helsinki on Tuesday morning. He was injured and transferred to hospital.
The man was reported in the early morning, with police arriving on the scene and talking to the man. Police say the situation escalated and they eventually shot and wounded the man.
Police said later that he had been holding a handgun, and refused to drop it when ordered to do so.
Seven deaths in 18 years
According to the Finnish News Agency STT police last shot someone in April, when a motorist shot at police during a car chase in Lempäälä. Police say they returned fire and the driver died of his wounds.
One officer was injured in that incident, but his wounds were not life-threatening. STT says that violence towards police has doubled since 1999, but remains much less common than in many countries.
Since 2000, seven people have died after being shot by Finnish police.
