A demonstration outside the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran turned violent on Monday afternoon, say Helsinki police. They detained four people.
Law enforcement officials say that protesters stole a flag from the embassy property and set it on fire. They also threw rocks at a police helicopter that was being used to film the scene.
Police say that around 150 people took part in the demonstration. No-one was injured.
Disturbance of the peace, violent resistance
Three individuals were taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated disturbance of the peace for the flag-burning. Another was detained for suspected violent resistance against an official.
The embassy is located in Kulosaari, a quiet, mostly-residential island district in eastern Helsinki.
Authorities had been informed in advance of a peaceful demonstration to be held from 1 to 3 pm.
According to a police statement, “during the demonstration, the participants’ feelings became heated”.
Police have promised more information about the incident on Tuesday.
