Two police officers were injured on Saturday night during a high-speed chase that ended in Vantaa with the suspect apprehended.

Police say the incident began near Lohja on the main Helsinki-Turku road around nine in the evening, when a car noticed the police trailing them and tried to get away.

The car hit speeds as high as 230km/h before ending up in the Vantaa neighbourhood of Korso.

Police say they then laid a spike strip in the car's path, after which the suspect fled on foot and was detained by officers with police dogs nearby.

Police say the suspect was wanted for questioning independently of the car chase.

One police car veered off the road during the chase, and the two officers inside required medical treatment for their injuries.

The incident caused extensive delays to traffic in the area as police closed the Ring III orbital road for a time.
