US President Joe Biden on Friday announced his intent to nominate Douglas T. Hickey as his new ambassador to Finland.
The Associated Press reports that Hickey is a prominent Democratic fundraiser and telecom executive.
Hickey has "30 years of operational experience holding senior-level positions in the telecom, Internet and technology industries," a White House release stated.
During former President Barack Obama's administration Hickey served as the United States Commissioner General at Expo Milano, the 2015 World's Fair.
Like other political appointees, Hickey's nomination must be confirmed by the United States Senate before he can take up office in Helsinki.
The US Embassy in Finland currently has a Chargé d'Affaires ad interim.
Following Biden's inauguration earlier this year, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said he hoped for stronger US ties under the new administration.
