Finnish President Sauli Niinistö announced on Friday that he had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

A tweet Niinistö posted on Friday afternoon said Zelensky updated him about the situation on the battlefield and the progress Ukrainian forces have made against invading Russian troops.

Niinistö added that the pair also discussed Finland's aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

Zelensky also issued a statement on Twitter about their phone call.

The Ukrainian president said that he "informed President Niinistö about the current situation on the front line," and discussed further cooperation between Ukraine and Finland.

Zelensky also said that he "expressed gratitude for the help provided," and that the conversation also touched on the issue of visa restrictions for Russian citizens.

On Thursday, Niinistö suggested Finland may consider further tightening conditions that Russians need to meet to be granted a visa.
