Parliament: No Charges Against Vanhanen

Parliament has decided not to bring charges against former Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen for his role in a campaign funding scandal.

All political parties, including the True Finns, voted against moving the case to the High Court of Impeachment.

Last week the Parliament’s Constitutional Law Committee concluded that although Vanhanen should have recused himself from funding decisions regarding Youth Foundation finances, there were insufficient grounds for prosecution.

Vanhanen received over 23,000 euros in campaign contributions from the Youth Foundation, and later took part in decisions on funding the foundation from the Slot Machine Association’s funds. The government granted more than a million euros to the Youth Foundation between 2006 and 2009.

The final decision in the case lay with parliament. As parliament has voted against prosecution, the case is now closed.
